The sun parakeet inhabits tropical areas on savannahs or dry savanna woodlands in South America. They are most often found along the Amazon riverbank, forest valleys, and coastal flooded forests and rarely found above 1200 meters of altitude. They are also very sensitive to habitat changes such as cattle grazing and fire suppression and are considered endangered. Because they are found in very wild, unchanged habitats that are difficult to reach, few studies have been conducted. They live in pairs or small flocks but can be found in large flocks of 20 to 30 birds where there are fruiting trees and bushes.
