The blue and gold macaw inhabits the subtropical and tropical forests, woodlands, and savannas of South America and Central America. To avoid predation they will nest in high trees. They are also monogamous and reach sexual maturity around 3-4 years old. In captivity, these macaws can live up to 50 years old. Though they usually are found in pairs they may also congregate in flocks. Their predators include the harpy eagle, hawk eagle, and orange-breasted falcon.
