The painted river terrapin inhabits estuaries, tidal parts of rivers, and mangrove swamps and creeks. During mating season they will migrate up to 3 km. These turtles are sexually dichromatic as well as seasonally. This means that their shell color and body marking will be different based on their sex and on the season. During the mating season, the female’s head will become a reddish color and the male’s head will be white with a red stripe edged in black. Other than mating, feeding, and basking these turtles are solitary. They are herbivorous and eat mangrove fruits, fallen vegetation, shoots, and riverside plants.
